Woodlands Community Library Volunteers

Thanks to Well Doncaster for supporting us with the funding on this. We had previously done a couple of freebies for this group as we had long standing connections and an interest in their positive development.

We got to find out out about their ambitions for the future and decided we were going to produce an Andy Whitby style bouncer.

We managed to create a real banger which was rousing the other Library users through the thick wooden doors.

Thanks to the group for their passion and enthusiasm. and don’t forget to book on if you are interested in a free DJ tuition session at Bullcroft Memorial Hall on 29th of May from 2 till 4pm.

Limited places available so don’t hang about.

E.F.L. Winners Rotherham United Community Trust

We have had a great week at Rotherham.

On Saturday we supported the children’s capital of culture events at New York stadium.

We had great participation and shared the good news that the trust had just earned the English Football League award for community work. An accolade that for us is a grassroots provider gives us so much confidence to keep on pushing boundaries with the work that we do.

Credit goes to everyone at the trust for putting the hard work in in the background, to allow providers like us the opportunity to support young people in the area.

The impact on their lives and their families’ lives is really the payoff for the work that we do.

This is the fourth award which has been given out to our partner Organisations, and we are proud to play our part again on this one.

Thanks to Jonny Allen at the trust for sticking with us through the challenges we faced over the last 12 months, we will continue to do our best to support the young people of Rotherham and their families.

Thanks to Zoe for inviting us to the Capital of Culture Event, my son enjoyed meeting some of the players who were kind enough to pose for photographs and of course Miller bear for getting involved with a musical Jam.

Therapeutic Hang Drum.

The Hang drum

The Hang Drum is just one of our brand new range of Acoustic Instruments. We have been supported by North Doncaster Development Trust to add to our state of the art Music Technology equipment to provide a framework for building confidence and learning new skills.

Due to the odd way of working in the non profit sector, we have equipment, we have insurance, we have all the qualifications and experience, we also have many disadvantaged groups in need of working with us, all we need is funding to get on with the work.

Watch this space for developments as we are confident of positive news very soon.

Eves Trust Legends.

SATURDAY JUNE THE 8TH KICK OFF 2PM ECO POWER STADIUM

Its getting to that time of year again. The Evestrust Legends game featuring Doncaster Rovers and Liverpool Legends. It was a wonderful experience last year to play and raise much needed funds for families affected by Cancer.

At the end of the match this fella, former Doncaster Rovers player Chris Brown was one of the first to shake my hand.

We were joined by 5000 football fans for a great day out in the sunshine, a win for Rovers and £86,000 raised for local people affected by cancer.

It was great to get a goal assist and watch Chris get two goals of his own, as he is always getting ribbed on his You Tube Channel (Under the Cosh) by Barnsley lad John Parkin for his lack of career goals.

I’m looking forward to cheering them on from the stands this year, it will be another goal-fest I’m sure.

Start Spreading The News.

We were back at New York Stadium in Rotherham today. We delivered in the RUFCST Museum, aside of learning of the first ever penalty to be scored in a match against Darlington and various facts of play off victories and football memorabilia our focus was on health and development.

We got really useful feedback from one of the participants today. I was told that the workshop was really easy to understand and that our core work, which we always begin with when working with new people, was a clear path to songwriting and composition.

After 10 years of honing and development this wasn’t a surprise, but hearing it from a young person was special.

Thanks to Jonathan Allen for looking after us again and good luck for tomorrows 24 hour #walkforrio which is a fundraiser for the son of Tommy Spurr, who used to play for Doncaster Rovers.

S.T.E.M……..THE FLOW.

Instant engagement is the key to delivering any kind of work with young people. Over the past 3 years our partner organisations have shared the benefits of our work such as reducing anxiety and building social confidence.

It’s fulfilling to hear the positive feedback we have received and we are blessed to have found partners who share our passion.

When you work with tools everyday they can almost become invisible to you, I think we sometimes take for granted our privilege of being able to use state of the art equipment and we often ignore the obvious elements of Science and Technology in our work.

  • This week we have given an opportunity for young blind people to closely communicate using the technology as a tool. We were Invited by the Ridge Employability College who are focused on giving young people employment opportunities in the community.
  • We have also spent time at Highfields Boxing Club where we opened up the conversation about how young people used technology and we all had different views of what a mobile phone is for.
  • We embraced sound design at Bentley Myplace this week and came up with a classic house groove. We sculpted sound using a synthesiser and made collaborative choices on what we were aiming for.
  • The STEM acronym is used a lot nowadays and there can be a fear factor surrounding maths and science, our focus is on the fun, so we feel the flow rather than the…….. Errrrrrrr no.

We have places available at Highfields Boxing Club on Wednesday night from 4.45pm

Also Bentley Myplace from 7.00pm on Wednesday.

Active Fusion Summer HAF Camps

Another milestone for us as we surpassed our previous weekly delivery record with attendance of over 250 young people.

Our philosophy is to make music as accessible as possible from the first moment, then show a pathway to progression into the more challenging elements of Music Production and DJing.

We saw many new faces who were introduced to the start of their 90minutemusic journey, while those returning, went on to take part in playing music from around the world to support the commonwealth games.

An overall highlight, was having a group that I had not worked with for a year remind me of what they remembered from the previous session together and went on to produce their own quality track, experimenting with FX and mixing.

Over the course of the Summer camp we had visits from Pro photographer Gavin Joynt, Lindsy James from Active Fusion and MP Nick Fletcher, who all got hands on and joined in on the sessions.

As usual thanks to the staff from Active Fusion and all the caretakers and school staff who allowed us to work alongside them as they prepare for the new school year ahead.

90 Minute Music with Active Fusion

I’ve loved it today and I would really like to do this again. E. B. age 8

Over 150 session attendances over the past week. Great to be teaming up with Active Fusion again.

Creating partnerships is vital for the work we do in the community and it is a special feeling to be able to support our local area.

One of the children today stated that he didn’t like music before the session began, but went on to contribute well with the group and engaged well with technology.

We have encountered this a few times over the years and showing young people that they can do things that they don’t feel confident about is important to us.

We are not going to pass on 24 years of experience in a short period of time, but we can show them that there is a place for them in the world of music.

Returning to join up with Active Fusion has given us the opportunity to build on the foundations of our previous work on communication and respect. We moved on to exploring music from around the world to coincide with the commonwealth games. The young people benefitted from being allowed to experiment with instruments from far and wide which in many cases they are experiencing for the first time. We believe in giving opportunity by removing barriers of cost and geographic location.

We will be back supporting Active Fusion again soon, big thanks to the staff as always for making me feel part of the team and thanks to the young people for their effort and enthusiasm.

Machines: Better or Worse?

For us technology has enabled us to do what we love every day. Supporting young people with their development while working creatively with music.

But has the development of technology made things worse? Do we have shorter attention spans? Are we becoming more anxious? Is anybody truly bored anymore?

Our philosophy in 90 Minute Music comes from researching how humans utilise technology and exploring how we can add value in terms of sociability and building resilience.

There is often a perceived conflict between us and technology especially when it goes wrong.

When technology fails

In our experience some young people are more likely to be enthusiastic about engaging with technology than each other.

We use this to our advantage by using the technology to focus on the things that technology has begun to erode. We share our knowledge of music, production and the world of DJing to identify how we can synergise groups of individuals by learning about their primary needs.

We have supported thousands of young people with their development by identifying areas of support and quickly putting that support in place through our training and expertise.

Although our aims are to support health and development, the nature of our work is having fun and sharing each others qualities.

I didn’t like 90 Minute Music, I loved it.

Proud to support Eve’s Trust

Great to spend an afternoon with my own kids. We took some drums down to the Eve’s Trust legends charity game between Doncaster Rovers and Sheffield Wednesday. Rovers were schooled by the ex pro’s from the Wednesday team with tidy performances from Chris Brunt and Paolo Di Canio. An honourable mention goes out to our own James Coppinger and Colin Douglas who kindly gave my son an autograph. I spoke to Duggie after the game and he said that he may be aching in the morning but as everyone who gave their time he was happy to support such a positive cause.

Myplace Bentley

We bring everything to create Electroacoustic Music to your venue

Another busy week of delivery as we began our return to Bentley. As we had discussed with senior youth leaders and identified a need for our provision, it was good to get going. We were proud to have our new volunteers supporting, both did a great job of engaging and I’m sure will go on to do great things. Our vision is to nurture, build confidence and resilience and ultimately give young people the tools to be both cooperative and assertive. We began this work through volunteering 9 years ago, so we recognise the value to not only the community but the volunteer and their family.

Norbreck Communal Hall Askern

Week two at the Norbreck, a great vibe as our growing group shared humour and we learned of the growing number of events for local people. It is always rewarding to hear the young people reminding me of what we did the previous week. The simplicity of our approach gives a great framework for fast progress and cohesive group work. We got hands on with the digital equipment and created beats using the step sequencer, we also had the adults on hand to write a rap, which was excellently delivered.

Bullcroft Memorial Hall Carcroft

This venue is beginning to gain momentum and is a fantastic resource for the community. We had primary aged children, who engaged really well with the Digital gear. Big respect goes out to the parents who got involved whole heartedly. Massive thanks to my new colleague Tina for bringing her boys and spreading the word in the local area. We are in the early days at Bullcroft but already seeing a positive attitude and learning of essential skills.

We still have places available at all venues next week, but they are limited so get in touch.

  • Myplace Bentley 5.30pm Wednesday
  • Norbreck Communal Hall 5.00pm Thursday
  • Bullcroft Memorial Hall 7.15pm Thursday
